The three textures of mold on wood

Forget color for a moment. Texture is the more reliable first read.

1. Fuzzy

This is the classic. Raised, cottony, or hair-like growth that stands up off the surface. On wood you'll often see it on the underside of subfloor, on rim joists, on the back of a dresser that was pushed against a cool exterior wall, or on furniture that spent a summer in a garage. White and gray fuzzy growth is extremely common on damp framing lumber.

Fuzzy growth means there has been sustained moisture — usually days or weeks, not an afternoon.

2. Slimy or shiny

Wet, dark, almost greasy-looking patches. This is what heavily saturated wood looks like when growth has been sitting in standing moisture. It often looks black or very dark green and may smear rather than brush off. Slimy growth is a signal that the water source is still active.

3. Powdery or speckled

Fine dots, pinpricks, or a dusty film across the grain. This can look like someone flicked pepper or chalk dust across the board. Speckled black or dark green dots on joists and sheathing are one of the most common things homeowners photograph and worry about.

The colors — and why they don't identify the species

On wood you'll see:

  • White — very common on framing, firewood, and the undersides of furniture. Often fuzzy, sometimes powdery.
  • Gray — frequent on older wood and crawlspace joists.
  • Green and olive — common where humidity stays high without full saturation.
  • Yellow, tan, pink, orange — less common but not unusual, especially on wet cellulose-rich surfaces.
  • Brown and black — the ones that get the phone calls.

Here is the honest part: you cannot name a mold species by looking at it, and neither can a photo. The same organism can appear white when young and dark when mature. Different organisms can look identical on a joist. "Black mold on wood" is a description of color, not a diagnosis of Stachybotrys chartarum. What matters more than color, practically speaking: how much of it there is, whether it's still wet, and whether the wood is structural. Public health guidance from the EPA and CDC takes the same view — the response depends on the extent of growth and the moisture source, not on identifying the species first.

The look-alikes, in detail

Blue stain in lumber

This one trips up a lot of people building decks or finishing basements. Blue stain (also called sap stain) is a discoloration caused by fungi that colonized the log or green lumber before it dried at the mill. It shows up as blue-gray, gray, or blackish streaks that run with the grain and are inside the wood, not on it.

Tells:

  • It won't wipe off, brush off, or change with a rag.
  • It's flat — no texture at all in raking light.
  • It appears on brand-new lumber that has never been wet in your house.
  • It follows grain lines and sapwood patterns rather than forming blotches.

Blue stain is cosmetic. It does not weaken the wood and it is not a sign your framing is wet.

Sap and pitch

Fresh lumber, especially pine, bleeds resin. Sap comes out as amber, sticky, sometimes crystallized deposits around knots. It's tacky to the touch and clear-to-golden, not fuzzy. Nobody confuses it with mold twice — but the first time, a dark crystallized pitch pocket can look alarming.

Water stains

A water stain is a record of where moisture stopped. It's flat, often tan or brown, and frequently ringed with a darker edge — the tidemark. Run a fingertip across it: nothing comes off, nothing feels raised.

A water stain by itself doesn't mean you have mold. It means you have (or had) a leak. But wood that stayed wet long enough to stain is wood that may have grown something, so look closely at the edges and the hidden side.

Dry rot and brown rot

This is the one that actually threatens your house. Rot fungi digest the wood itself. The signs:

  • Wood darkens to brown or orange-brown and shrinks.
  • It cracks into a distinctive cube or checkerboard pattern.
  • A screwdriver pushes in easily — the classic probe test on a joist end, sill plate, or deck post.
  • You may see white or gray strands, sheets, or fan-shaped growth.

Surface mold you can often clean. Rot means the wood has lost strength and needs to be evaluated and usually replaced. If you probe a structural member and the tip sinks in, stop and call a contractor or structural pro.

Dirt, soot, and cobwebs

Crawlspaces and attics collect a lot of gray fuzz that is not biological. Dust webs on joists look startlingly like growth in a flashlight beam. The difference: dust collapses and smears when touched, and it hangs in strands from corners rather than spreading across a flat face. Where mold shows up on wood — and what each location tells you

Crawlspace joists and subfloor underside. The most common call. Usually white, gray, or speckled black growth on the floor joists and the underside of the subfloor, worst near the perimeter or under bathrooms. Attic sheathing. Dark gray or black staining on the underside of roof decking, often heaviest on the north slope or near soffit vents. Cause: bathroom fans venting into the attic, or blocked ventilation letting warm moist air condense on cold sheathing.

Rim joists and sill plates. Fuzzy white growth at the point where framing meets concrete foundation. Cause: condensation on cold surfaces, poor insulation detail.

Subfloor under flooring. Discovered when carpet or laminate comes up after a leak or an appliance overflow. Can be black, gray, or a splotchy brown-orange.

Furniture. White or gray fuzz on the back, underside, and inside drawers of pieces stored in garages, basements, or against cold walls. Often paired with a strong musty smell in the drawers.

Firewood. Mold on firewood is normal and expected — it's damp organic material stacked outside. The problem isn't the mold on the log, it's bringing a stack of it indoors and letting it dry out next to your living room. Store firewood outside, bring in what you'll burn that day.

Three quick tests you can do right now

  1. The raking light test. Hold a flashlight nearly parallel to the surface. Texture jumps out. Stains and blue stain stay flat; mold casts tiny shadows.
  2. The damp cloth test. With gloves on, wipe a small edge of the patch with a damp cloth. Dirt smears and transfers. Mold may lift partly but leaves a stain in the grain. Blue stain doesn't change at all. Do this gently — never dry-scrub, which sends spores airborne.
  3. The probe test. Press a screwdriver into the wood at the darkest spot. Firm resistance means surface issue. Soft, spongy, or crumbling means rot, and that's a different conversation.

Add the smell check: an earthy, damp-basement odor is meaningful even when you can't see growth. If you're getting a musty smell with nothing visible, hidden mold is worth ruling out.

When to handle it yourself and when to call

Reasonable DIY:

  • A patch smaller than roughly 10 square feet
  • Finished or sealed wood — furniture, trim, a painted sill
  • The moisture source is identified and fixed
  • Nobody in the home has asthma, allergies, or a compromised immune system

Call a professional:

  • More than about 10 square feet of growth
  • Structural framing: joists, sill plates, sheathing, load-bearing members
  • Anything soft, crumbling, or cube-cracked
  • Growth that keeps returning after cleaning
  • Mold in or near HVAC equipment or ductwork
  • Sewage, flood water, or unknown-source water was involved
  • Household members having symptoms they connect to the house

Those thresholds come from widely cited public health guidance, and the 10-square-foot line is a rule of thumb, not a law of physics. If a 6-square-foot patch is on a joist under your kid's bedroom, get eyes on it.

If you're cleaning it yourself

  1. Fix the water first. Cleaning wood while it's still getting wet is a waste of an afternoon.
  2. Gear up. N95 respirator, gloves, eye protection. Open a window or run a fan exhausting outward.
  3. Don't dry-scrub. Dampen the surface first so spores don't go airborne.
  4. Use detergent and water. Scrub with a stiff brush, wipe, and repeat. Bleach is generally unnecessary on porous wood — it doesn't penetrate well and mostly lightens the color while leaving moisture behind.
  5. Dry thoroughly. Fans, dehumidifier, days not hours. Get the wood's moisture content down and keep it there.
  6. Accept the stain. Clean wood can stay discolored. That's normal — the growth is gone, the pigment is in the grain. Sanding lightly can help on furniture; on framing it's usually not worth it.
  7. Prevent the encore. Vapor barrier in the crawlspace, dehumidifier in the basement, bath fan vented outside, gutters clear, furniture pulled a few inches off exterior walls.

How can I tell mold from a water stain on wood?

Texture and edges. A water stain is perfectly flat with a smooth or tidemark-shaped border and nothing lifts off when you wipe it. Mold has dimension — check it with a flashlight held at a low angle, and you'll see the growth casting shadows the stain can't.
